Product Overview
This program reviews the complexities of acid-base balance in critical illness and provides strategies for evaluating the arterial blood gas. Although this is an introduction to the intricacies of the balance, the primary focus on metabolic acidosis enriches understanding and rapid evaluation of both acute and compensatory mechanisms. By the end of this program, the participant should be able to: 1. Describe the physiology involved in the acid-base balance required for homeostasis. 2. Explain the role and significance of pH, bicarbonate (HCO3), partial pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO2), and partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaO2) to maintain acid-base balance. 3. List various causes of altered acid-base balance. 4. Identify normal arterial blood gas values. 5. Describe how compensation occurs and how to identify it from the arterial blood gas. 6. Interpret the results of a variety of arterial blood gas samples.
